What Webster Technique Is and Why It Matters
The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic protocol developed for pregnant patients. It addresses sacral and pelvic joint dysfunction along with the soft tissue tension in the round ligament and supporting muscles. The goal is to restore balance to the pelvis so the baby has optimal space to position properly and the mother experiences less low back, hip, and SI joint pain through pregnancy.
The technique was developed by Dr. Larry Webster in the late 1970s and refined through decades of clinical practice. It is taught by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) and most chiropractors who use it routinely have specific certification in the protocol. The technique is gentle, precise, and safe to use throughout pregnancy.
Advanced Wellness Chiropractic in Bridgeton offers Webster-trained prenatal chiropractic care to expecting mothers across the greater St. Louis area. Patients drive in from Maryland Heights, Creve Coeur, Florissant, Hazelwood, St. Charles, and beyond because Webster-certified providers are not on every corner. This post covers what the technique involves, when to start care, and what to expect.
When Pregnant Patients Come to See Us
There are a few common reasons pregnant patients schedule with us.
Low back and SI joint pain, especially in the second and third trimester, is the most common reason. The combination of relaxin (the pregnancy hormone that loosens ligaments), the shifting center of gravity, and the changing biomechanics of pregnancy puts significant strain on the lumbar spine and SI joints. Most patients respond very quickly to gentle chiropractic adjustments combined with Webster-specific protocols. See our low back pain page.
Round ligament pain, the sharp pulling sensation in the lower abdomen and groin as the uterus grows, often involves soft tissue tension at the round ligament attachment. The Webster protocol includes specific soft tissue work on this ligament that frequently produces immediate relief.
Sciatica during pregnancy can result from disc pressure or from muscle compensation patterns. Either responds to chiropractic care during pregnancy. See our sciatica page.
Breech, transverse, or otherwise non-optimal fetal positioning later in pregnancy is the third common reason. The Webster Technique does not turn babies (we are not doing external cephalic version). What the technique does is restore pelvic balance so that the baby has more room to move into the position the baby's biomechanics naturally favor, which for most babies is head-down. The research literature on Webster Technique and breech presentation is encouraging but not conclusive, and we are careful to set realistic expectations.
General pregnancy wellness and birth prep. Many of our pregnancy patients come in not because of pain but because they want to enter labor with a well-balanced pelvis, mobile sacrum, and relaxed pelvic floor support. This is one of the most rewarding patient populations to work with.
When to Start Care
Most patients start care in the second trimester, often around weeks 14 to 20 when the early pregnancy fatigue eases and low back symptoms begin. Some start earlier, particularly patients who already have a relationship with a chiropractor or who have a history of pregnancy-related back pain.
If you are coming in specifically for fetal positioning concerns, the optimal window is weeks 32 to 36. Earlier than that, most babies still have plenty of room to move on their own. Later than that, the window for natural repositioning starts to close. Webster Technique can be useful right up to delivery, but it works best when there is still time for the baby to find the optimal position.
Care frequency varies. Some patients come weekly through the third trimester, others come every two to three weeks. We tailor the plan to your specific needs.
What a Webster Visit Looks Like
The first visit takes about 45 minutes. Dr. JC starts with a thorough pregnancy-specific history: how many weeks, prior pregnancies, prior chiropractic experience, current symptoms, any pregnancy complications, OB/midwife information. We also discuss your birth plan and preferences so we can support the goals you are working toward.
The exam includes specific Webster-related assessments: sacral motion analysis, pelvic balance evaluation, round ligament palpation, and orthopedic screens for the lumbar spine and hips. We document baseline findings so we can track changes.
Treatment uses a specialized adjusting table with cutouts and pillows that allow you to lie face-down comfortably regardless of how far along you are. The adjustments themselves are gentle, low-force, and specifically modified for pregnancy. Soft tissue work on the round ligament and surrounding structures is part of the protocol. Nothing about the visit is forceful or jarring.
Most patients describe a noticeable difference in comfort by the end of the first visit. Sustained changes typically build over 3 to 6 visits.
Coordinating With Your OB or Midwife
We work alongside OBs and midwives, not against them. Chiropractic care during pregnancy is complementary to medical prenatal care, not a replacement. If your provider has specific concerns or restrictions, we accommodate them. We are happy to send notes about our findings and treatment to your prenatal provider on request.
Most OBs in the St. Louis area are familiar with chiropractic care during pregnancy and are supportive of Webster-trained chiropractors when patients have musculoskeletal complaints. A few are more cautious about chiropractic in general. If your provider has concerns, we can discuss them with you and them.
Pediatric Chiropractic After Birth
Many of our prenatal patients become pediatric chiropractic patients after delivery. Newborn chiropractic care can help with:
- Colic and feeding difficulties — see our colic and infant care page
- Torticollis and head shape concerns — common after difficult deliveries
- Latching and breastfeeding issues related to cervical mobility
- Sleep and digestion concerns
